UK Pledges Drones, Typhoon Jets, and HMS Dragon to Strait of Hormuz Mission with £115M Funding

The UK committed autonomous mine-hunting equipment, Kraken autonomous drone boats via the 'Beehive' system, Typhoon jets, and HMS Dragon to a UK-French-led multinational defensive mission for the Strait of Hormuz, backed by £115 million in new funding. Defense Secretary John Healey announced the contribution on May 12, 2026 at a virtual summit with over 40 nations. HMS Dragon is already en route to the Middle East. The strictly defensive mission aims to restore commercial shipping confidence in the Strait, through which one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. Over 1,000 UK personnel are already deployed in the region.
Technical significance
The deployment of the Royal Navy's 'Beehive' system with autonomous Kraken drone boats represents a significant operational test of the UK's 'Hybrid Navy' concept — integrating uncrewed systems alongside traditional warships. The £115M funding specifically for mine-hunting drones and counter-drone systems reflects lessons learned from the Houthi drone campaign in the Red Sea. If successful, this model of autonomous systems deployed from a mothership (RFA Lyme Bay) could become the template for future naval operations.
