US and Iran agree deal to end war; Strait of Hormuz to reopen
The United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire deal that both sides described as the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Pakistan confirmed the agreement, which includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping lane. Vice President JD Vance said the agreement is about a page and a half and very general, with many details to be worked out later. Oil prices fell and global shares jumped after the announcement. However, significant obstacles remain preventing shipping traffic from returning to pre-conflict levels, including security concerns, mines, and tolls. The deal leaves Iran's leadership intact and its nuclear future still subject to negotiation.
