Honda drops EV sales targets, pivots to hybrids with 15 new models

Honda announced at its annual business briefing on May 14 that it is dropping its goal of having 20% of sales be EVs by 2030 and its target of 100% EV and fuel cell sales by 2040. Instead, the company will reallocate development and production resources into hybrid models, previewing prototypes of a hybrid Accord sedan and Acura RDX SUV built on a new two-motor hybrid platform. Honda plans to launch 15 next-generation hybrid models. The strategic pivot reflects slower-than-expected EV adoption and the continued strong market demand for hybrid vehicles, particularly in North America.
Technical significance
Honda's reversal of its EV targets is a significant signal about the state of the electric vehicle transition. As one of the world's largest automakers abandoning specific EV sales goals, it suggests that the industry consensus is shifting toward a longer hybrid transition period. This has implications for battery supply chains, charging infrastructure investment, and the competitive positioning of pure-EV makers like Tesla and BYD against traditional automakers.
