iOS 26.5, expected in mid-May 2026, brings back end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhone and Android โ a feature Apple tested in the iOS 26.4 beta but pulled before the March release. The E2EE toggle is enabled by default in Settings > Messages > RCS Messaging, with encrypted conversations marked by a lock symbol. The feature remains in beta and works only on supported carriers and devices. This closes a major security gap, as cross-platform RCS messages between iPhone and Android currently lack encryption. The update also includes groundwork for Apple Maps ads and a new Pride wallpaper.
