The BJP crossed the 148-seat majority mark in West Bengal's 294-seat assembly, winning approximately 190 seats compared to the TMC's 65 โ a dramatic reversal from 2021 when the TMC held 215 seats. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. Record 92.93% voter turnout was recorded. The result marks the first time the BJP has formed a government in West Bengal and represents a fundamental realignment of Bengali politics ahead of the 2029 national elections.
Strategic interpretation
The BJP's breakthrough in Bengal โ a state it had never governed โ consolidates Modi's dominance ahead of the 2029 national elections and gives the party a commanding position in Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats. The result is a severe blow to the opposition INDIA bloc. However, the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls that removed 89 lakh voters remains controversial and could face legal challenges.
