An April Invamer poll of 3,800 respondents showed left-wing Historic Pact candidate Ivan Cepeda leading Colombia's May 31 presidential election with 44.3% support, up 7.2 points from February. The right-wing vote is split between Abelardo de la Espriella at 21.5% and Paloma Valencia at 19.8%. Cepeda would defeat either rival in a June 21 runoff by margins exceeding 50%. Incumbent President Gustavo Petro is constitutionally barred from seeking consecutive re-election. Political violence has escalated ahead of the vote.
Strategic interpretation
Cepeda's commanding lead and the fractured right-wing opposition suggest Colombia's left is positioned to extend its hold on power, ensuring continuity of Petro's social reform agenda. However, the narrowing runoff margins against Valencia indicate that opposition consolidation could make a second round more competitive than current first-round numbers suggest.
