Amazon employees face investigation after testifying for Seattle data center moratorium
Tags Infrastructure · Enterprise

Three Amazon software engineers — Patrick Schloesser, Darius Irani, and Liesl Wigand — were called into HR meetings and told they were under investigation after testifying at Seattle City Council hearings in support of a moratorium on new data centers. The Seattle City Council passed the one-year moratorium on June 9th. The employees, members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ), have filed a complaint with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights alleging illegal retaliation. Amazon says it is investigating whether the employees violated corporate communications policies against speaking as company representatives. The case tests the boundaries of employee free speech on political matters related to employer operations.
Technical significance
This case highlights the tension between tech companies' AI infrastructure expansion and local community concerns about energy use, water consumption, and land use. The outcome could set precedent for how tech companies handle employee activism on AI-related issues and influence other cities considering data center regulations.
