Adobe acquires AI image and video enhancement tool maker Topaz Labs

Adobe announced the acquisition of Topaz Labs, a two-decade-old company whose AI models for video upscaling (Astra) and image enhancement (Wonder) are already part of Adobe Creative Cloud. Topaz's technology for running large video models on consumer-grade GPUs will be integrated into Adobe's Firefly AI app and broader creative suite. The acquisition, closing in H2 2026, strengthens Adobe's position against Canva and Blackmagic Design in AI-powered creative tools.
Technical significance
Adobe's acquisition of Topaz signals that the key differentiator in AI creative tools is no longer just model quality — it's the ability to run large models efficiently on consumer hardware. Topaz's local execution capability gives Adobe an edge in latency-sensitive creative workflows and positions Firefly as a more responsive alternative to cloud-dependent competitors.
