Cal Poly researchers led by Ian Powell demonstrated that periodically varying magnetic fields can create entirely new quantum states with no static counterpart, published in Physical Review B as 'Flux-Switching Floquet Engineering.' The paper maps a topological phase diagram showing the precise structure of these exotic quantum states, which could address quantum computing's biggest challenge: qubit stability and error resistance. The work shows that time-dependent control of magnetic fields can produce driven quantum phases that don't exist in static conditions.
