Samsung Secures Meta's 3rd-Gen MTIA Chip Production in $6.5B Deal

Samsung Foundry will manufacture Meta's third-generation MTIA AI chips using 2nm process technology in a deal exceeding $6.5 billion. This shifts Meta away from TSMC, which produced earlier MTIA generations. Meta plans 5GW data center capacity by 2030 with a 6-month chip release cycle. Anthropic is also evaluating Samsung partnership for custom ASICs as part of $50 billion data center investment.
Technical significance
Samsung's vertical integration (logic + HBM + NAND) provides competitive advantage for AI chip customers. Deal diversifies Meta's supply chain beyond TSMC amid capacity constraints. Anthropic's interest signals broader fabless AI company trend toward custom silicon, accelerated by GPU shortages and rising inference costs.
