Prime Minister Modi's BJP won the key state of West Bengal for the first time (206 of 293 seats, defeating the Trinamool Congress which was reduced from 215 to 81 seats) and secured a third consecutive term in Assam (79 of 126 seats). More than 154 million people voted across five states and territories. The BJP now controls most major states in Eastern India including Odisha, Assam, Bihar, and West Bengal, strengthening its position in Parliament ahead of the 2029 national elections. In Tamil Nadu, the TVK caused a major upset by beating both the ruling DMK and the AIADMK.
Strategic interpretation
The BJP's expansion into West Bengal fundamentally alters India's political map and significantly strengthens Modi's path to a third national term in 2029. The scale of the victory โ overturning a 15-year TMC stronghold โ suggests Modi's campaign themes of illegal immigration and economic development resonated across traditional party lines. However, the opposition's collapse raises concerns about democratic checks and balances, particularly given the BJP's majoritarian governance record. The Tamil Nadu upset by TVK signals potential fragmentation in southern state politics.
