Taiwan received its first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets on 2 October 2026 under an USD 8 billion agreement for 66 aircraft, a delivery that followed a Trump-Xi meeting by about a week. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense reported six PLA aircraft and seven PLAN ships around Taiwan on 1-2 October, with four aircraft crossing the median line. A reported USD 14 billion US arms package is being held by the Trump administration.
Strategic interpretation
Delivering aircraft already contracted while reportedly holding a larger package lets Washington signal commitment to Taiwan's defense without spending new political capital with Beijing. Beijing's likely reading is that hardware deliveries continue under existing commitments while the bigger sale stays frozen as leverage. For Taipei, incremental deliveries improve capability but do not change the quantitative gap, so the delivery's main function may be political reassurance rather than military effect.
