Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle signed an Oct. 1, 2026 memo establishing Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command (FASCOM) and a Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Autonomy, ordering autonomous capability fielding no later than FY2028. The memo, titled 'Army Autonomous Initiatives,' directs the Army to integrate autonomous capabilities into at least six formation areas — aviation, armor, fires, sustainment, engineer and training — and to prioritize autonomous fires, combat vehicles, watercraft resupply, breaching, reconnaissance/surveillance/target acquisition and crewed-uncrewed teaming. It expands authorizations for 15X Tactical UAS Specialists and 390A Robotics Technicians to all applicable units, following Defense Secretary Hegseth's Sept. 30 announcement of an Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM).
Technical significance
Creating a dedicated autonomy command and a matching acquisition executive gives the Army a single institutional owner for autonomous systems, which may shorten the path from prototype to fielded capability. The FY2028 fielding deadline and the six named formation areas define a concrete procurement roadmap that defense contractors and dual-use robotics firms can plan against. The expansion of UAS and robotics technician authorizations signals the Army expects autonomy to be sustained by trained operators, not just acquired as hardware.
