Sony and TSMC form joint venture for next-gen image sensors targeting automotive and robotics

Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC signed a non-binding MOU to establish a Japan-based joint venture โ majority-owned by Sony โ to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors for physical AI applications in automotive and robotics. Production will be at Sony's new Kumamoto fab, with Japanese government subsidies of approximately 60 billion yen (~$380 million). Sony brings image sensor design expertise; TSMC contributes advanced process technology and manufacturing scale. Investments will be phased based on market demand.
