Russia's May 9 Victory Day parade was significantly scaled back, with no military hardware displayed on Red Square for the first time since 2007. The Kremlin cited security concerns from Ukrainian drone attacks, which have struck deep into Russian territory in recent weeks โ including a drone that hit a luxury high-rise apartment four miles from the Kremlin. One-third of Russian regional capitals cancelled parades entirely, including border regions. Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 32 drones heading toward Moscow on the day of the parade. The war in Ukraine has now lasted longer than the Soviet Union's fight against Nazi Germany (1941-1945). Mobile internet was shut down in Moscow during the event.
Strategic interpretation
The scaled-back parade is a visible symbol that Russia's war is not going to plan. The absence of military hardware โ a centerpiece of Putin's power projection โ combined with regional cancellations and internet shutdowns, signals growing domestic vulnerability and the reach of Ukrainian long-range strike capabilities into the Russian heartland.
