Ghana formally petitioned the African Union on May 6-8 over recurring xenophobic violence targeting African migrants in South Africa, urging the AU Commission to treat it as an urgent continental concern. Ghana wants the issue discussed at the AU's Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in June. South Africa's government said it will cooperate with any AU review while denying systematic xenophobic attacks. Several African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria have urged their citizens in South Africa to stay alert. Mozambique dispatched a delegation to assess the safety of over 300,000 Mozambican workers. South Africa's Border Management Authority has deported approximately 500,000 undocumented immigrants since 2023.
Strategic interpretation
Ghana's petition elevates a domestic South African issue to a continental diplomatic matter, potentially straining relations between two of Africa's most influential economies. The AU's response — or lack thereof — will test the bloc's willingness to hold member states accountable for treatment of other African nationals.
