North Korea announced on May 8 that it will deploy new 155mm self-propelled gun-howitzers with a range exceeding 60 kilometers to border artillery units within the year, placing Seoul's 10 million residents within striking range. Kim Jong Un inspected the weapons at a munitions factory and stated the extended range 'will provide a great change and advantage in the land operations of our army.' Separately, Kim ordered the 5,000-ton destroyer Choe Hyon โ North Korea's largest and most advanced warship โ handed over to the navy by mid-June. The vessel has conducted strategic cruise missile launches that analysts believe could carry nuclear warheads. Kim called for building two additional destroyers after a second vessel of the same class was damaged during a botched launch.
Strategic interpretation
The artillery deployment and destroyer commissioning represent a dual escalation โ enhancing both asymmetric threats to Seoul and blue-water naval capabilities. The timing during heightened US-Iran tensions may be calculated to test allied attention and response capacity. The destroyer program, despite the botched second launch, signals Pyongyang's intent to project power beyond coastal waters.
