US forces on May 8 disabled two Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to breach the US naval blockade of Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman, the third such tanker strike that week. Hours earlier, US forces thwarted Iranian missile, drone, and boat attacks on three US Navy destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz and struck Iranian military facilities in response. The UAE simultaneously intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones launched from Iran, causing three moderate injuries. Since the conflict began, UAE air defenses have intercepted 551 ballistic missiles, 29 cruise missiles, and 2,263 drones, with 230 injuries and 13 deaths recorded. Only about 40 ships crossed the strait the week of May 3, down from a pre-war average of 120 per day.
Strategic interpretation
The simultaneous US tanker strikes and Iranian attacks on both US warships and UAE territory signal that neither side is fully adhering to the nominal ceasefire. Iran's willingness to strike a Gulf Arab state directly may be intended to pressure the UAE and Saudi Arabia to distance themselves from the US campaign. The continued military exchanges during negotiations suggest both sides are trying to improve their bargaining positions before committing to a deal.
