Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on May 8, 2026 to establish a joint venture for developing and manufacturing next-generation AI image sensors. Sony will hold a majority stake and operational control. The JV will be based at Sony's new fabrication facility in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The sensors target physical AI applications in automotive, robotics, and advanced smartphone cameras. The Japanese government (METI) is providing up to ยฅ60 billion (approximately $380 million) in subsidies. Sony Semiconductor has doubled image sensor shipments to 20 billion units. The partnership is part of Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki's fab-light strategy to reduce in-house manufacturing while maintaining technological leadership.
