Pentagon and FAA Complete Successful Laser Counter-Drone Trial at White Sands
Tags Defense Tech ยท Infrastructure

The Department of War and FAA successfully tested AeroVironment's LOCUST high-energy laser counter-drone system at White Sands Missile Range, demonstrating the ability to hit both stationary and airborne targets without adverse impact to civilian aircraft. The system demonstrated automated safety shutoff capabilities if pre-fire checklists are not met and operated safely in complex airspace environments. The FAA completed a safety assessment validating that the laser poses no additional risk to passenger aircraft. The LOCUST system is interconnected through higher-level command and control systems that collect information from aircraft transponders, radar, and other sensors to provide an Integrated Air Picture. Five installations โ Fort Huachuca, Fort Bliss, Naval Base Kitsap, Grand Forks Air Force Base, and Whiteman Air Force Base โ will participate in the directed-energy counter-drone pilot program.
